Many pets go missing because of an open gate, a firecracker or a trip away from home. What brings them back fastest is usually a pet ID tag worn before anything goes wrong. This guide explains what a pet ID is, the main types, their pros and cons, and how to choose one.

What is a pet ID tag?

A pet ID tag (also called a name tag or pet ID card) is anything attached to your pet that tells a finder who the pet is and who to contact. A good ID should identify the pet, help the finder reach you fast, and protect your private details such as your home address. Today there are engraved tags, QR tags, NFC cards and microchips.

4 common types of pet ID

Engraved metal tags are simple but hold little information, must be re-engraved when your number changes, and show your phone number to everyone. QR tags open an online profile you can update anytime and control. NFC cards open the profile with a tap of an NFC phone. Microchips are implanted by a vet and cannot fall off, but a finder needs a special reader, so many owners pair a chip with a visible tag.

Quick comparison

Engraved tags are readable by anyone but hard to update and expose your number. QR and NFC can be read with an ordinary phone, updated in the app, hold a full profile, and let you choose what to show. Microchips are discreet but need a reader. The most important thing is that your pet always wears an ID a stranger can read on the spot.

Is a QR ID tag a GPS tracker?

No. A QR code does not track location and has no battery. It works when someone finds your pet and scans it; the finder can then choose to share the location with you. GPS trackers are a different tool that needs charging and often a subscription.

What PetID offers

PetID has a QR collar tag (119.000đ), a pet ID card with photo, ID number, QR and NFC chip (199.000đ), and a combo of both (299.000đ, saving 19.000đ). Finders need only a phone camera, no app. See PetID QR tags.

How to choose

Outdoor pets: a QR collar tag. Frequent vet or boarding visits: the ID card with NFC. Both: the combo. Make sure the collar fits (two fingers' gap). If your pet is microchipped, still add a visible tag. Check the tag and profile regularly.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes: leaving the tag at home, an empty profile, an outdated phone number, a loose collar, and forgetting to turn on lost mode. Check these five points monthly.

Set up the profile

Upload clear photos with distinguishing marks, check your contact number, choose what is public (no detailed home address), and test-scan the code from a friend's phone. See how to use the PetID QR.

When your pet goes missing

Turn on lost mode with one tap: the QR page switches to a red alert so anyone who scans knows your pet is missing. Also post on the PetID lost pets board and follow 7 steps to find a lost pet.

FAQ

Does the finder need the app? No, just a phone camera. New phone number? Edit it in the app; the tag still works. Lost or damaged tag? Reorder in the app; you can also generate a new code and the old one stops working. Must I buy a tag to use the app? No, the app is free. Does a tag replace a microchip? They complement each other; ask your vet about microchipping.
